The Fierce Urgency of Now
Climate change presents the largest systemic challenge and opportunity of our lifetime.
While some of the current gaps will be closed by scaling up and deploying existing technologies like solar and wind, a large portion will require breakthrough technologies. Solving the global climate challenge will require the creation and successful scale-up of hundreds of new ventures. Because of how long it takes these companies to get to market and the scale they need to reach, we need to launch the companies that will scale by 2050 today. Technology commercialization, derived from massive U.S. investments in basic and applied research at universities and the national labs, are critically needed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While emphasis has been placed on translational academic research and new funding has been made available (e.g., seed grants, accelerators, incubators) over the last decade, there is still a huge gap between early ideas and the creation of a successful new venture.
The Grasshopper Climate Venture Builder Model was developed to address these fundamental challenges wherein its success is based on an abundance of good ideas, & through a high touch collaborative approach, it enables ideas to come to life. By combining National Lab facilities, experts & technologies with entrepreneurial strengths & research within university ecosystems in an additive — not competitive — way, we foster interdisciplinary collaboration that drives both individual & shared success, making each new venture more than the sum of its parts.
Climate Gateways
We believe that many potentially world-changing inventions remain on the lab room floor either because the inventors are focused on academic careers or the groundbreaking commercial application is not easily recognizable. Or sometimes, an invention only becomes truly transformative when combined with ideas from other disciplines or technologies from other labs. Grasshopper Ventures matches technological capabilities with an entrepreneurial assessment of pressing market needs which are strategically organized around broad focus areas we call climate gateways. Rather than starting with a solution, we start by defining unrecognized opportunities around problems & technology spaces – within a climate gateway. We subject the best ideas to technical and market de-risking. These activities culminate with the formation of Grasshopper ventures, which focus on having technically feasible solutions, clear value propositions, product-market fit, beachhead customers, and exit strategies.
