In furtherance to bring knowledge to bear on the world’s great challenges, Grasshopper Climate Ventures created a fresh approach to climate venture formation. Modelled after the “research investment firm,” Grasshopper Climate Venture Builders combines translation & technology expertise to identify, build, & launch transformative startups leveraging University & DOE research, technology, facilities, experts & resources. Our model is intentionally designed to reduce barriers traditionally present in centralized, university-based entrepreneurship programs by creating a more inclusive, transparent and innovative ecosystem where university & National Lab intellectual capital is fully leveraged, and students, faculty, and external stakeholders can co-create, invest in, and democratize the process of turning research and innovation into practical, real-world applications that can address the global challenges posed by climate change, help mitigate environmental impact, stimulate economic growth, & benefit humanity as a whole.
The process often starts with creative brainstorming sessions identifying opportunities around problems and technology spaces, which generate a concept within a specific gateway. A gateway can also be proposed directly through sponsorship to drive new product, service, or technological innovation aligned with strategic corporate objectives. We oversee and develop multiple venture exploration and building projects simultaneously to create greater efficiency, economies of scale, shared resources & distributed risk across various projects.
Grasshopper is intentionally designed to work outside of the traditional structures yet aligned with strategic objectives. This allows for flexibility, risk-taking, and the exploration of disruptive ideas without the constraints of existing structures. Our first step involves assessing strategic industry interest with 'concept papers' & seeking input from technical experts to counterbalance our own biases. This simple, yet comprehensive analysis helps us make informed decisions to proceed with an idea. Unlike traditional incubators & accelerators, we don’t have a set timeframe, pivot until product/market fit is found & only pursue ideas that can become scalable & profitable.
We lead team formation and research through the early development phases then recruit, train & oversee post-doctoral students to execute the product & development plan where a majority of both technical & market de-risking will continue. Each venture focuses on technically feasible solutions, clear value propositions, product-market fit, beachhead customers, and exit strategies.
These activities culminate with the formation of independent Grasshopper ventures launched from partner Universities. This collaborative partnership model helps leverage added expertise & accelerate each venture's path to success with a solid foundation that promotes regional economic development, workforce development, social inclusion & solving climate change.
Venture Builders play a pivotal leadership role in leading the Development and Execution Phase of each venture project, focusing on market research, technology scouting, and the establishment of a new commercial opportunities. This role involves collaboration with students, faculty, and industry experts to identify and leverage cutting-edge technologies for specific applications.
Venture Fellows are post-docs or graduate students in deep tech areas with a passion to change the world with technology that participate in the venture building process for a limited period of time. Many Venture Fellows will decide to join the Venture full time.
Key faculty members from within each University & DOE Lab are the source of big ideas and technologies that we create high impact around. Principal inventors & researchers can act as technical advisors, Chief Scientific & Technology Officers and academic Co-Founders to the Grasshopper Venture.
Grasshopper Ventures has multiple innovation gateways. Each gateway will have an advisory board made up of experts from around the world that are in related fields to the gateway. In early stages, the board can help counterbalance our own biases to help us make informed decisions to proceed with an idea. Subsequently, the board can can help approve ideas moving through each phase.
